- Start a regular exercise program
- Avoid wearing tight fitting clothes
- Quit smoking (nicotine weakens the esophageal sphincter and increases acid production)
- Raise the head of your bed 6 to 9 inches (15.25 to 23 cm). Stacking pillows won’t work, so instead place a foam wedge under the top part of the mattress. Or you can prop up the legs on the head of the bed with wooden blocks.
- Wait 3 hours after eating before lying down
- Try to eat more evenly sized meals throughout the day
- Eat in a relaxed atmosphere, where sitting is possible, such as at a dinner table
