1. Start a regular exercise program   
  2. Avoid wearing tight fitting clothes 
  3. Quit smoking (nicotine weakens the esophageal sphincter and increases acid production)
  4. Raise the head of your bed 6 to 9 inches (15.25 to 23 cm). Stacking pillows won’t work, so instead place a foam wedge under the top part of the mattress. Or you can prop up the legs on the head of the bed with wooden blocks.
  5. Wait 3 hours after eating before lying down
  6. Try to eat more evenly sized meals throughout the day
  7. Eat in a relaxed atmosphere, where sitting is possible, such as at a dinner table
